General Info - Statewide Permit


A permit, issued by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, to collect wildlife, (birds, nests or eggs, mammals, reptiles, amphibians), from the wild for scientific or educational purposes.

Any properly accredited person of known scientific attainment desiring to collect wildlife, (birds, nests or eggs, mammals, reptiles, amphibians), from the wild for scientific or educational purposes must first obtain a Scientific Collection permit from the Wildlife and Heritage Service of the Department of Natural Resources. This permit is also required to capture, mark and release wildlife.  Public educational institutions also need this permit to salvage wildlife and to maintain specimens for educational purposes.

Obtaining the Permit

  1. For scientific purposes, details of which species are to be collected, methods of collection, and final disposition of the animals must be provided with the application.

  2. For educational institutions, list of species desired and purpose of the education must be provided with the application.
