Obtaining the License

Ready to get your license? - Steps, Requirements, and Documents

  1. Applicants must provide proof of age and identity, lawful status, social security number or proof of ineligibility, and Maryland residency.

    Applicants must have attained the age of at least 15 years and 9 months.

    If under 16, applicants must provide a completed verification of identity and/or school attendance to the Maryland Vehicle Administration.

    If under 18, a parent or guardian must co-sign the learner's permit application.

  2. Applicants must pass a vision screening and a knowledge test before obtaining a learner's permit.

  3. Applicants must obtain a valid learner's permit before any behind-the-wheel driver education training or driving on Maryland roadways.
