General Info - Statewide Permit


The Fee Fishing Lake Permit, as issued by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, allows permission to provide fishing opportunities for pay on privately-controlled lands and waters. The permit allows paying customers to catch and keep fish (to the limits of the pond or lake rules) without needing to obtain a Maryland Recreational Fishing License.

Homeowner associations may also utilize the Fee Fishing Lake Permit to allow association members to fish their common lake or pond without needing to obtain individual recreational fishing licenses.

Obtaining the Permit

Ready to get your permit? - Steps, Requirements, and Documents

  1. New applications must include site maps.

  2. A map showing the location of the facility with directions from the nearest major roadway (initial application only).

  3. A description of the fee fishing operation and a sketch of the facility, ponds, etc., including any inflow or effluent from the facility.

  4. If employing one or more persons, a certificate of compliance with state workmen’s compensation laws pursuant to §1-401 of the natural resources article, annotated code of Maryland.

  5. An employer-applicant may provide, as evidence of insurance, a workmen’s compensation insurance policy number or binder number, in lieu of submitting a certificate of compliance.

Renewal and maintenance -

Maintaining your Permit (aka Related forms/requirements to maintain Permit/stay in good standing)

  1. Maintain shipping and receiving records by species of stocks on hand at the facility, and the distribution of fish or aquatic plants to or from the facility. All records shall be maintained at the facility, or at a specified location other than the facility and be made available to the department for inspection upon request.

  2. Notify the department immediately upon discovery of any disease affecting the fish or plants at the facility that has the potential to contaminate native or naturalized plants or animals.

  3. Submit an annual report of activities under the permit.
