General Info - Statewide License


 A license is required by the state of Maryland for an individual, partnership, corporation, or other organization promoting professional boxing, amateur and professional kickboxing, amateur and professional mixed martial arts (MMA) and professional wrestling events.

The Maryland State Athletic Commission manages, supervises and regulates the sports of professional boxing, amateur and professional kick boxing, amateur and professional MMA, and professional wrestling in the State of Maryland. The Commission establishes high health and safety standards for the participants in these sports. The Commission carries out its mission by reflecting, and maintaining, safety and fairness as its guiding principles. The Commission strives to be fully attentive to, and supportive of, the various needs of licensees engaged in their respective fields and professions. The Commission’s strong commitment to regulatory excellence is reflected through the work and integrity of its experienced staff of officials, inspectors and ringside physicians.

Obtaining the License

Ready to get your license? - Steps, Requirements, and Documents

  1. Submit with an application a financial statement that has been notarized or certified by a certified public accountant and contains the following: Assets separately itemized, liabilities separately itemized, and other financial information that may be requested by the Commission.

  2. Corporate applicant must also submit a list of its articles of incorporation, a list of officers, and the name of the chief executive official designated to be responsible for all matters pertaining to the corporation.

  3. Upon request of the Commission, provide additional evidence to demonstrate that the applicant has evidence concerning the financial ability to pay the taxes, purses, arena rental, personnel, advertising, and other expenses related to the contest.

  4. Secure two surety bonds - expense bond, and "boxing and wrestling tax" bond.

  5. Promoter may engage in matchmaking activities without having to obtain a matchmaker's license.
