General Info - Statewide License


 An individual, partnership, corporation, or other organization arranging the matching up of contestants who are competing against each other in a boxing, kickboxing or mixed martial arts (MMA) contest must be licensed as a matchmaker in the state of Maryland.

The Maryland State Athletic Commission manages, supervises and regulates the sports of professional boxing, amateur and professional kick boxing, amateur and professional MMA, and professional wrestling in the State of Maryland. The Commission establishes high health and safety standards for the participants in these sports. The Commission carries out its mission by reflecting, and maintaining, safety and fairness as its guiding principles. The Commission strives to be fully attentive to, and supportive of, the various needs of licensees engaged in their respective fields and professions. The Commission’s strong commitment to regulatory excellence is reflected through the work and integrity of its experienced staff of officials, inspectors and ringside physicians.

When considering to approve a contest proposed by a matchmaker, the Commission may direct the matchmaker to:  (1) provide additional information relative to the fight history and training history for both contestants being proposed to compete; and (2) provide, upon request, a written justification for approving the contest.

Obtaining the License

  1. A licensed matchmaker may not be a licensed manager or second.

  2. A licensed matchmaker may not be directly or indirectly manage a boxer, kickboxer or MMA contestant.

  3. A licensed matchmaker may not have a financial interest in a boxer, kickboxer or MMA contestant who is participating in a contest that is a part of the boxing, kickboxing or MMA show in which the matchmaker is acting.
