Transportation Alternative and Recreational Use FY26 Funding Application

Administered by State Highway Administration, these competitively selected federal funds are for transportation alternative and recreational use projects. All project requests are for 80% reimbursable funds and include a 20% match. These projects should be transportation-related community projects that strengthen the intermodal transportation system and/or support recreational trails and amenities within the state of Maryland.

Approximately 60% of the Funding is awarded within sub-allocations to three Maryland Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPOs): The Baltimore Regional Transportation Board (BRTB), National Capitol Region Transportation Planning Board (TPB) and Wilmington Area Planning Council (WILMAPCO) who review and approve projects within their area, as well as statewide. Click here to see if your project is within one of these MPOs.

Project sponsors are responsible for the design, management, permitting, construction, and implementation of a project, and assume the maintenance and legal liability for the duration of the projects useful life (unless another entity is identified). SHA staff are program liaisons responsible for reviewing the applications for eligibility and completeness; making final funding decisions and issuing award notifications; and approving the reimbursement and closeout process. More information on the roles and responsibilities of the Project Sponsor and SHA can be found in the Transportation Alternatives Program Manual and Recreational Trails Program Manual.
